Why Here?

Immigrants are under terrible stress due to recent policy changes, local 287(g) enforcement, and changes to state law. These changes were made, regrettably, without consideration to the East Coast Migrant Stream or our general labor needs in other sectors. As a result, workers and their families are suffering inhumanely in their efforts to meet basic needs such as food purchases, are afraid to enroll their children in K-12 education, experience increased discrimination, etc.

Advocates, now more than ever, must remind local and state governments of the necessity of the immigrant workforce, the federal mandate to educate and how it all relates to recent state policy and law modifications, the price and availability of food for all, and the immediate necessity for reform.

Mr. Mauricio Farah Gebara is the Inspector General of the National Commission on Human Rights. This is a role that encompasses programs directly related to human rights violations regarding migrants, human trafficking and the grievances of journalists and human rights defenders.

Mr. Farah Gebara received his law degree in law at UNAM and obtained a Master's degree in Politics at the University of Essex, England.

At the forefront of legislative changes on migration and freedom of expression, Mr. Farah Gebara is one of the most recognizable voices in international migration and a recurring lecturer in national and international forums, such as those organized by the UN, the University of Notre Dame, the Institute of Legal Research at UNAM, the International Organization for Migration and other academic institutions and civil organizations promoting human rights in Mexico and the United States.

Mr. Farah Gebara is a regular contributor to print media such as the newspaper Reforma, the Millenium Journal and the agency Notimex, which has circulated over 150 articles by Mr. Farah Gebara on the issue of migration and human rights.

The Inspector General of the National Commission on Human Rights is an essayist and the author of several studies including A Comparative Study of the Parliamentary Institution in America, Northern Problems Arising from the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City and the Transition to Democracy in Spain and Mexico, among others.
