Why Here?
Immigrants are under terrible stress due to recent policy changes, local 287(g) enforcement, and changes to state law. These changes were made, regrettably, without consideration to the East Coast Migrant Stream or our general labor needs in other sectors. As a result, workers and their families are suffering inhumanely in their efforts to meet basic needs such as food purchases, are afraid to enroll their children in K-12 education, experience increased discrimination, etc.
Advocates,
now more than ever, must remind local and state governments of the necessity of
the immigrant workforce, the federal mandate to educate and how it all relates
to recent state policy and law modifications, the price and availability of
food for all, and the immediate necessity for reform.
